School Start August 13th
Welcome Back
Dear Maxwell Families: Welcome back for the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. Teachers and staff are excited and energized for the start of the school year. We hope you and your children are looking forward to the year as well. Since the summer began, staff has participated in professional development in many areas and is continuing to improve the vertical alignment of the curriculum and assessment with Common Core State Standards to ensure that your student is ready for college and careers that they choose. The custodial staff has been working diligently to prepare our campus for the start of the school year. We have some new staff this year: • Sixth Grade Instructor: John McElhinney • Principal: John Bustos • Assistant Custodian: Sarah Cobaugh We are fortunate to have our current highly qualified staff returning to Maxwell Schools to instruct your students. The 2018-2019 school calendar is enclosed in this letter. The calendar highlights the following to help you with your planning: • Early Release Days (school is released at 2pm) • Progress and Report Card Days • School Holidays See important dates below: July 30 – August 3 Kerry Barnett, our school counselor will be calling you to set up an appointment to develop or update your student’s Next Step Plan and to schedule 7-12 grade students. Monday, August 13 First day of school Tuesday, August 21 (6 pm) Back to School Night-This is a time when parents/guardians will meet in the classroom with teachers and learn about grade level curriculum, projects, and expectations. (Meal will start at 5:30 pm) Another way to keep updated on information about Maxwell Schools is to use the website, Morning breakfast begins at 7:25 am; there is a free breakfast for all students. School begins at 7:55 am and ends for K-6 at 3:55 pm and 7-12 at 4 pm. The staff and I are committed to delivering a high quality of education for your students. We look forward to a successful year. Fall Sports
Back to School Sports Meeting
We would like to start to welcome back our students and parents. We hope that you had a restful and eventful summer break. We are excited that the fall sports season is here. We are looking forward to another great year. We will be having a mandatory parent and athlete meeting on August 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. This meeting is mandatory in order for your child to participate in athletics. If this date conflicts with your schedule, you will need to contact Amadeo Soto, Athletic Director at 575-447-3084 or 575-375-3018. There are many changes within our district policies as well with the New Mexico Activities Association that will bring out the very best in each of our students. We will strive to hold all parties accountable as we work to give our students, parents and community the best experiences possible. Before athletes will be allowed to practice they will need to make sure that they have completed the following: • Have a new physical on file with the school dated after April 1, 2017 • Completed the NFHS Student Concussion course at or . This course is an annual recertification. The course must be completed after April 1, 2017. • Signed Concussion acknowledgement form by students and parents. • The school must have record of student insurance Football practice will start on August 6th in Springer. If your child is interested in participating in Football you will need to contact Mr. Soto as soon as possible, so that proper arrangements can be made for your child. Cross Country and Volleyball practice will start on August 13. Coaches will go over the practice schedule with you at the August 7th meeting. Coach Brazil, National Coach of the Year
National Coach of the Year
Coach Eloy Brazil was recognized on February 17. 2018 for his selection from the National Federation of High School Sports, Coach of the Year. On January 11, 2018, Coach Eloy Brazil was named National Basketball Coach of the Year for 2017. Coach Eloy Brazil graduated from Cimarron Schools in 1972 and started his coaching career in Cimarron in 1976 after graduating from the College of Santa Fe. Coach Brazil has been coaching for 36 years and within that time has had 30 winning seasons. In these years he has coached for Cimarron Schools for 16 years, Springer for 13 years and Maxwell for 7 years. Coaches first state title came with the 1978-79 season with Cimarron Rams. Coach Brazil started with Springer Schools in 1991. Later earning two state championships in 2002 and 2004. Coach Brazil came to Maxwell in 2012 and has led his teams to 7 winning season and the school’s first state championship in 2017. During the presentation Coach Brazil was presented with the revealing of a banner that will hang next to the 2017 State Basketball Championship banner. Coach was also presented with a blanket from the Maxwell Booster Club. Athletic Director, Amadeo Soto, presented Coach Brazil with his National Coach of the Year plaque.
